The Group That Poetry Started
This evening’s readings are from The Sound of Unspoken Things: Poetry of the Tuesday Writers Retreat, a book evolved from a poetry group that no one planned. The group spontaneously arose at Family Focus of Evanston, a community and family support agency. Two women writing poems together during a work break became a few women, became a gathering of women at tables in the library, including staff workers, office workers, custodians, doulas, and directors. Hard-working, pressured, and dedicated women started meeting every Tuesday at 2:00. We shared prompts and lines and feelings and became the Tuesday Writers Retreat. Creativity in community fights oppression of all sorts. Poetry is one vital way that community caretakers take care of ourselves.
The Tuesday Writers Retreat is a living demonstration of poetry’s natural power to comfort, inspire, and connect people. As the group says,
"Once the pens start goin’ The thoughts start a flowin’“
Participants are invited to bring one poem to share.
