Giving Sorrow Words
Poetry heals. That simple premise is the heart of the work of the National Association for Poetry Therapy (NAPT), which offers this gathering of healing poems originally collected after September 11, 2001. Poets Naomi Shihab Nye, Robert Bly, Lucille Clifton, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, United States Poet Laureate Billy Collins, and many others join with notable poetry therapists to create a trail map for navigating the difficult terrain of tragedy, loss, grief, and healing.
This revised and expanded second edition uniquely offers writing and discussion ideas for each poem, as well as guidelines for healing professionals.
First printing compliments of the National Association for Poetry Therapy and Baltic Street Into Action.
Giving Sorrow Words is offered free to anyone who can make use of it, and is not permitted to be sold or resold. We suggest a $5 donation per copy to cover postage and shipping supplies, with a bulk rate of $25 for 10 copies. PLEASE BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS!
We believe that the poems and suggested writing prompts in Giving Sorrow Words will provide solace in tough times for persons recovering from trauma. We would greatly appreciate your taking two minutes to send us this information:
1. What is the name of the group/agency receiving/using the books? Quantity?
2. Population being served?
3. Please – let us know, if you have used it, what was your experience?
A one sentence review would be extremely helpful, as we will need the continuation of funding
to print more books for survivors of trauma. For example:
“This little book gave my homeless clients great comfort.”—Stan Jacobs (or S.J.)
“Giving Sorrow Words was a gift of hope as we were recovering from the
devastating fire!”---Bert Thurman (or B.T.)
Who would have thought that poetry could ease my heart after this tragedy?
Thank-you!--- Rosa Rivera (or R.R.)
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
