Ukraine project.

How do writers experience war through words? What is life like in Ukrainian cities during the war? Our December 2023 presentation featured first-hand accounts from Ukrainian poets and volunteers Anna Liudnova, Olena Bodasiuk, and Yaroslav Karpets, that include the bombings of cities, the attack on Kiev, and how Ukrainians are adapting to new conditions. How does poetry and other forms of expressive writing help civilians and the military? Does prophecy play a role in poetry? You are invited to view this remarkable poetry reading followed by an interactive discussion exploring poetry and survival in a war torn country. Healing Words: Poetry Therapy Techniques for Resilience and Hope

An International Support Series for Ukraine

We are proud to support an international effort on behalf of the Ukrainian people. Since the full scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the violence of war and displacement of families on the run has resulted in a skyrocketing mental health crisis.Therapists in Ukraine, who are in crisis themselves, are overloaded and struggling to meet the needs of their people. Two volunteer American credentialed poetry therapists, provided by the National Association for Poetry Therapy and The International Federation for Biblio/Poetry Therapy, facilitate support groups via zoom three weeks of the month. PsyCrisisUkraine provides a translator. BSIA (Baltic-Street-Into-Action) is actively supporting this project as well.

The goals are two-fold: 1. to sustain and nurture the Ukraine therapists with support groups to maintain their mental health; and 2. to model how poetry therapy can be applied, we create a ripple effect. In turn, Ukraine therapists are applying poetry therapy with their veterans and families. Poetry therapy is a powerful healing tool in the treatment of trauma, anxiety, and depression.

In the midst of the war, an extraordinary young artist, Anna Liudnova, took it upon herself to volunteer –using a multi-modal approach–poetry, art, photography, and music with wonderful results. She is coordinating this project.
