Frequently asked questions.

Who can join the National Association for Poetry Therapy?

Membership in the National Association for Poetry Therapy (NAPT) is open to anyone who shares our mission of promoting growth and healing through language, symbol and story. Our members include people who have found, whether in their personal lives or through their professional endeavors, that words and stories contribute to personal growth, self-understanding, community-building, and emotional well-being.

What benefits will I receive as a member of the National Association for Poetry Therapy?

Benefits include various publications, discounted conference fees, and a variety of opportunities for connecting with others who share your interest in the healing power of words. Click here for Membership Benefits.

What is Institutional Membership?

Institutional membership is designed for academic institutions, health care facilities, corporations, and other entities who wish to provide a higher level of support for the National Association for Poetry Therapy (NAPT) in exchange for benefits designed to enhance the Institution’s ability to connect with other NAPT members as well as the NAPT as a whole. Please see the Institutional Membership page for more information.

Are any discounts available to reduce the cost of membership?

The National Association for Poetry Therapy offers reduced membership rates to students who are enrolled full-time in a college or university, to seniors (age 65 and over) to the disabled, and to veterans as well as active service members. You can find these membership categories and rates on the Membership Application page.

Are payment plans available for membership dues?

Unfortunately, because the administrative costs of such arrangements are prohibitive for the National Association for Poetry Therapy at this time, we are unable to offer payment plans for membership dues. You may, however, pay by credit card or personal check via the Membership Application page.

The membership year has already started. Do I have to pay for the full year?

The National Association for Poetry Therapy’s (NAPT’s) membership year begins on January 1 and ends on December 31 of the same year. All new members, who join either at the annual conference or before October 1, are eligible for the NAPT’s reduced Half-Year Membership rate (for new members only).

To avoid any interruption in membership service, we encourage all renewing members to send in their membership dues payments for the next year prior to October 1 of the current year. This will ensure that members do not miss any publications or announcements. Renewing members always pay the full membership dues for the following year even if they renew their membership after October 1 of the current year.
